Asparagus markets are elevated but steady. Quality has been good.
Broccoli: Alert
Markets are up and active in all growing areas. There is an AOG increase on Broccoli VA items. Quality is fair to good.
Brussel Sprouts: Alert
The sprout market is up and remain tight. Mexico has been dealing with erratic weather including rain, hail and wind – which has led to quality issues and lower yields. With Mexico supplies being tight, demand is now switching to Oxnard. Oxnard supplies have been limited already and is unable to keep up with demand. Salinas production will not start until the end of July. There is an AOG increase on all Brussel Sprout VA items. Quality and sizing are fair.
Cabbage:
- Green Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Red Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Bagged Cabbage: Market is steady. Quality is good.
Carrots:
- Cello markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Loose Mexican product remains very tight, quality remains good.
- Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good.
Cauliflower: Alert
Market is steady, but remains tight in all areas. Quality is fair to good.
Celery:
Markets are steady. Supplies and Quality is good.
Citrus:
- Orange: Valencia’s are the main variety. Val’s are currently peaking on 113ct/138ct as this season gets underway and will size up as the season progresses. At this point, we are seeing around 48hrs of gas times to help color up the Valencia’s. Brix are in the 12-13 range and fruit is eating very well. Quality is good.
- Lemon: Markets continue to strengthen across the board. District 1 (San Joaquin Valley) is finished, with District 2 (Ventura County/Oxnard) now the main growing region.
- 165ct and smaller sizes are very limited. Choice grade will dominate this crop, as normal, with less Fancy grade available due to growing conditions. Offshore fruit into the US has been delayed until lateJuly/early August. Mexico is projected to ramp up mid-July. Quality is fair to good.
- Limes: markets are steady. Quality has been good with some sporadic yellowing.
Cucumbers:
- Cucumber market is steady as supplies are good. Quality has been good on inbound.
- Euro Cucumbers markets out of Canada are steady. Quality is good.
Eggplant:
Market is strengthening. quality has been good.
Grapes:
The grape market remains steady at higher prices. Quality has been fair to good.
Herbs:
- Basil: Quality is fair.
Leaf Lettuce: Alert
- Romaine markets are up and active. Supplies are light to moderate due to erratic weather in Mexico, the Midwest, and the East Coast. Fringe and tip burn have been observed on arrivals. There is an AOG increase on all Romaine VA items. Quality is fair to good.
- Romaine Heart markets are up and active. Supplies are light to moderate due to erratic weather in Mexico, the Midwest, and the East Coast. Fringe and tip burn have been observed on arrivals. There is an AOG increase on all Romaine VA items. Quality is fair to good.

Lettuce Iceberg: Alert
Lettuce markets are up and sold out. Mexico has been unable to produce good lettuce so processors have been buying up acreage in Salinas Valley and Santa Maria. There is an AOG increase on all Lettuce VA items. Expect lighter carton weights to be 34-38 pounds on average. Misshapen heads are also reported from multiple suppliers. Quality is fair to good.
Lettuce Tender Leaf:
Arcadian, Spring Mix, Spinach, Cilantro, Arugula, and Italian Parsley. Markets are steady. Some discoloration, burn and insect damage can occasionally appear. Quality is fair to good.
Melons:
- Cantaloupes: Market is strong due to retail ads for the holiday. The warm weather is producing high quality Cantaloupes and they are peaking on 9 with Brix levels in the 13-16 range. Suppliers are currently transitioning from the desert to Central California. Quality is good.
- Honeydew: Market is strong due to retail ads for the holiday. The warm weather is producing high quality melons and they are peaking on 5 with Brix levels in the 13-16 range. Suppliers are currently transitioning from the desert to Central California. Nogales melons are very limited with limited availability. Quality is good.
Onions:
The onion market is experiencing an upward trend, driven by supply gaps in California and recent rainfall in New Mexico. Quality has been fair to good.
Peppers:
- Green bell markets strengthening as the peppers move up the coast to the northeast. Quality on inbound has been good.
- Red Pepper markets continue to go up. Quality is good.
Pineapples:
Market is steady. Quality has been good.
Potatoes:
Quality and sizing remain consistent with recent packs. Larger size cartons are tightening, and we are seeing upward pressure on pricing.
Strawberries & Bush Berries:
- Strawberry markets are steady. Production is steady against strong demand in the Salinas and Watsonville areas. We will continue to see light numbers coming out of The Santa Maria area until the second round of plantings begin to produce in two more weeks. Oxnard will also begin in about two weeks. Quality is fair to good
- Raspberry markets are up. West Coast production is starting this week. Baja and Central Mexico are still going. Quality is fair to good.
- Blueberry markets are up, very heavy demand. Jersey Blues are available and the extreme heat has slowed production coming into the 4th. Quality has been good.
- Blackberry markets are up. West Coast production has begun in a light way with numbers expected to increase by mid-July. Georgia is producing now as well. The PNW
- Oregon season has started in a light way. Central Mexico is still crossing numbers but quality has been poor. Quality is fair to good.
Squash:
- Green markets are tight. Quality is good.
- Yellow market has gone up drastically with demand heavily outweighing supply. Quality is fair to good.
Tomatoes:
Grapes are experiencing a slight gap across growing regions. Still decent supply of rounds and Romas however vine-ripes are somewhat limited through the McAllen area due to weather in Central Mexico. Tomatoes are available out of Baja, CA, TX, and the Carolinas. TN will get going this weekend in a light way with their summer crop.
- Round tomato markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Roma tomato markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Grape tomato markets are up and sold out. Quality is good.
- Cherry tomato markets are up and sold out. Quality is good.
Yams: Alert
Markets are active. Jumbo yams are in short supply; this situation is unlikely to ease until we reach the new crop harvest this fall. Orders moving forward will have a high probability of being prorated. Quality is good.
