Primo Weekly Market Update

Asparagus:
Markets are continuing to come off and availability is improving. Quality is good.
Berries:
- Blackberry markets are steady. Supplies are strong coming from Baja, Central Mexico, and California. Quality is fair to good.
- Blueberry market is staying strong. Domestic and Canadian production is done and Peruvian product is limited. Quality is good.
- Raspberry markets are steady. Supplies are strong coming from Baja, Central Mexico, and California. Quality is good.
- Strawberry markets are steady. We’re currently seeing a two-tiered market developing between the new crop out of Santa Maria and Oxnard and the older plantings in the Salinas and Watsonville regions. Quality in the northern areas is beginning to decline as the season winds down, leading to rougher product compared to the fresher southern harvests. Quality is fair to good. Green Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Red Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Bagged Cabbage: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
Broccoli:
Broccoli markets are coming off. Broccoli supplies remain slightly limited but are showing gradual improvement. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added broccoli items. Quality is fair to good.
Brussel Sprouts: Alert
Markets are sold out. Brussels sprout supplies continue to be limited. Growing regions in the Salinas Valley and Oxnard are facing challenges from insect pressure, some decay, and smaller sizing. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added Brussel items. Quality is fair to good.
Cabbage:
Carrots:
- Cello markets are mostly steady. Quality is good.
- Loose Markets are slowly coming down. Quality has been good.
- Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good.
Cauliflower:
Markets are coming off. Supplies remain strong across all areas, while there are some reports of insect pressure. Quality is fair to good.
Celery:
Markets are steady. Quality continues to be strong, with only minor seeder issues reported.
Citrus: Alert
- Lemon: Markets remain strong across all sizes. District 2 (Ventura/Oxnard) is the main production area, though volume is declining weekly. Smaller sizes (140ct and below) are extremely limited. District 3 (CA Desert/AZ) is starting with light volume. Compared to last summer, markets are elevated due to higher demand and reduced import supplies. Offshore arrivals remain light on both coasts, and Mexico’s season has begun with lower projected volume year over year.
- Limes: New crop fruit is currently peaking on 200ct larger sizes continue to be old crop which is starting to wind down. Overall fruit color is trending lighter green.
- Orange: Markets are up and sold out. Valencia’s are currently peaking on 72ct, with about a month left in the season. Gas times are averaging 3–4 days to address regreening. School demand has surged, driving up markets on 88ct, 113ct, and 138ct as availability tightens. The domestic Navel season is expected to start around mid-October. Shippers are holding to 6-week averages.
Cucumbers:
- Cucumber market is remaining tight. Quality has been good on inbound.
- Cello Cucumbers markets are coming off. Quality is good.
Eggplant:
Market is tightening. Quality is good.
Grapes:
Markets are steady. The domestic grape market continues to progress steadily with excellent quality as we transition from mid-season varieties into the fall picks. While the market is poised to push prices higher, ideal weather conditions and abundant inventories are currently keeping prices stable. Quality is good.
Herbs:
- Basil: Quality is fair.
Lettuce Iceberg:
Lettuce markets are coming off. Warm weather in the growing regions has accelerated growth, resulting in good supplies of this commodity that are expected to continue throughout the week. Weights are averaging between 39 and 44 pounds, depending on the shipper. There have been minimal reports of slight misshapen heads and some outer leaf discoloration. Current production is coming from the Salinas Valley and Southern California. Quality is good.
Lettuce Leaf:
- Romaine markets are coming off. Fringe and tip burn have been reported. Quality is fair to good.
- Romaine Heart markets are coming off. Fringe and tip burn have been reported. Quality is fair to good.
- Green Leaf markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Red Leaf markets are steady. Quality is good.
Lettuce Tender Leaf:
Arcadian, Spring Mix, Spinach, Cilantro, Arugula, and Italian Parsley. Markets are steady. Quality is good.
Melons:
- Cantaloupes: Markets are slightly up. The domestic cantaloupe market is beginning to firm up due to sizing from Westside fields. The second cut and rising demand are driving the market. Fields are still heavy on 9s, but sizing on 12s and 15s is improving. Brix levels are strong, ranging from 13–16. Quality is good.
- Honeydews: Markets are slightly up. The domestic honeydew market is beginning to firm up as sizing improves from Westside fields. The second cut and increased demand are driving the market, with fields still heavy on 5s but showing better availability on 6s and 8s. Mexican honeydews are expected to start in early October, weather permitting. Quality is good.
Onions:
Markets are steady. Onions are currently shipping out of Washington and Idaho, as the California and New Mexico seasons have ended. Rain in Idaho may impact harvest schedules and will need to be closely monitored. Quality is good.
Peppers:
- Green bell market is steady. Quality on inbound has been good.
- Red Pepper markets are coming off. Quality is good.
Pineapples:
Market is coming back down and availability has improved. Quality has been good.
Potatoes:
Idaho’s 40-70 count market has stabilized with new crop Norkotah’s now leading while Burbank’s are finished. New fields are mostly #1 grade, with #2s tight. Color potatoes are coming from CA, ID, MN, WA, and WI. Quality is good.
Squash:
- Green market is steady. Quality is good.
- Yellow market is steady. Quality is fair to good.
Tomatoes:
Strong volumes continue from Tennessee, Virginia, and other Eastern states, as well as Canada, Michigan, Alabama, and North Carolina. Western supplies remain steady out of California, Baja, and Central Mexico, with solid quality reported. The market is expected to remain steady through mid-October.
- Round tomato markets are coming off. Quality is good.
- Roma tomato markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Grape tomato markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Cherry tomato markets are steady. Quality is good.
Yams: Alert
Markets are active. Jumbo yams are in short supply. Orders moving forward will have a high probability of being prorated. Quality is good.
