August 10th 2023 Market Report

 Lettuce:

Lettuce markets are coming down and demand has eased up in the marketplace. Product availability will be much better this week compared to previous weeks. Mexico’s production has increased due to cooler temperatures, and Salinas’ production has also increased. Common defects include misshapen heads and sporadic weights ranging from thirty-seven to forty-three pounds. Quality is fair.

Leaf:

Romaine markets are slightly up. Slight tip burn are some common defects reported. Quality is fair to good.

Green and Red Leaf markets are slightly up. Slight tip burn are some common defects reported. Quality is fair to good.

Lettuce Tender Leaf:

There is good availability on Parsley, Cilantro, Arugula, Spring Mix, Arcadian, and Spinach, but we are still seeing yellowing come across on all tender leaf items. Quality is fair.

Carrots:

Cello markets are steady out West. Quality is good.

Loose market is steady. Quality is good.

Citrus:

Orange markets are moving up as school demand picks up. Valencia’s are the main variety. Quality is good.

Lemon markets are still up out West. We have started Import Lemons on 115, 140 and 165ct choice fruit. Quality is good.

Lime The lime market has leveled off and has been holding steady. New crop limes have slowly begun crossing into the US. Sizing on the new crop will be peaking on the 230ct/200ct, and we will continue to see 175ct and larger being old crop limes. There will be some scarring, and possibly some stylar showing up in the old crop (large sizes) limes as that fruit has been on the trees and exposed to the heat and humidity longer than the new crop fruit. We are seeing higher amounts of inbound product needing to be run and regraded for quality prior to shipping out. Look for the market to remain fairly stable for the next week or two unless there is some drastic weather.

Grapes:

Grape markets are steady. Quality is good.

Tomatoes:

There is a firm market on both coasts. The eastern supply has been good and quality has been fair out of North Carolina/Tennessee. The production of California has moved to the northern districts, while harvesting has begun in Oceanside. California quality is fair at best. Mexico is very limited on all tomatoes due to the recent weather. Canada has started with good quality.

Cabbage:

Green Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good.

Red Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good.

Bagged Cabbage: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
