June 29th, 2023 Market Report

 Lettuce:

Lettuce markets are stronger with some shippers being sold out. Salinas and southern California are seeing a decline in production. Some shippers are seeing sclerotinia in the fields which is causing lower yields. The average weight of liner product is 37-41 pounds. Expect this market to be active throughout the week. Quality is fair to good.

Leaf:

Romaine markets are becoming more active. There have been reports of sclerotinia and slight fringe burn. Quality is fair to good.

Romaine Heart markets are becoming more active. Quality is fair to good.

Green and Red Leaf markets are becoming more active. There have been reports of sclerotinia and slight fringe burn. Quality is fair to good.

Lettuce Tender Leaf:

There are still a limited number of tender leaf items. As a result of the heavy rains that California had when growers were planting the product, the product in Salinas is still behind schedule. Hopefully, the weather in the Salinas Valley will warm up and growth will increase over the next few weeks. This has affected Parsley, Cilantro, Arugula, Spring Mix, and Spinach. Quality is fair.

Broccoli:

Markets have become active. There are AOG triggers on florets. Quality is fair to good.

Cauliflower:

Markets have become active. Quality is good.

Carrots:

Cello and Loose markets are steady. Quality is good.

Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good.

Celery:

Markets are very active and most shippers are sold out. There have been fewer supplies of this commodity this week, causing a stronger market for it. Production in Salinas is moderate to light. The situation in Southern California is similar. The quality is fair with seeders still an issue. The escalation of value-added product will continue through the week.

Strawberries & Bush Berries:

Strawberry markets are up. Quality is good.

Raspberry markets are still active, the industry-wide shortage is beginning to ease up. The amount of Baja fruit crossing has been moderate. Due to previously cooler weather, California is still coming on slowly. Quality is fair to good.

Blueberries markets are coming off. Quality is good.

Blackberries markets are still active. Shippers are still in a gap on this item, but temperatures are warming in the California central valley and coastal regions. These higher temperatures should help produce more fruit arriving to the market over the next 2 weeks. Quality is fair.

Potatoes:

The potato market is strong and very tight. 40-80CT are tight. #2 Idaho’s are getting very tight. Quality has been fair. New crop should start shipping August 7th.

Onions:

The onion market is stable. Overall quality is good.

Cucumbers:

Cucumber market is steady but should start coming off soon as more harvest begins in the northeast. Quality is good.

Euro cucumbers markets are up. Canadian product is running short. Quality is fair to good.

Peppers:

Green bells market is steady. Quality is good.

Red Pepper markets are coming off. Quality is good.

Herbs:

Basil: We are still seeing minor quality issues. Overall, quality is fair to good.

Citrus

Orange markets are steady with good supplies. Quality is good.

Lemon markets are still up out West. We have started Import Lemons on 115, 140 and 165ct choice fruit. Quality is goo

Lime market continues to be tight, and pricing is on the way up much faster than we anticipated. We are seeing the market react almost daily. Lower numbers of inbound product and higher % of issues that have to be graded and out run. Product is being run at the grower, and then again at the packing sheds. The overall % of #1 product being produced has decreased even more with continued stress on the trees from the drought and heat.

Grapes

Grape markets are steady.

Tomatoes:

As Quincy winds down, the eastern supply is lighter. Similar out west, Western Mexico finishing by the end of the month. Baja volume and quality are improving. Once North Carolina Mountain region and North California crops get going in early July, we should expect steady to moderate supply.

Cabbage:

Green Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality has been good.

Red Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality has been good.

Bagged Cabbage: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
