Primo Weekly Market Update

Asparagus:
Markets are steady. Mexican asparagus supplies are steady with soft demand and flat pricing through late December. Strong production in Southern Baja, Sonora, and Central Mexico should maintain consistent volume, while Caborca won’t peak until mid-January. Quality is good.
Berries:
- Blackberry markets are coming off. Fruit supplies remain strong from both Baja and CMEX. An occasional red cell is still being observed in some packs. Quality is good.
- Blueberries Market is steady. Peruvian supplies remain available and volumes from Central Mexico continue to increase. Production is also moving through McAllen, Texas. Quality from both regions has been good.
- Raspberry markets are coming off. Fruit supplies remain strong from both Baja and CMEX. Quality is good.
- Strawberry markets are coming off. Strawberries remain in light supply across all districts, but conditions have improved this week as volumes increase from Oxnard, Central Mexico, and Florida. Quality is fair to good. Green Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Red Cartons: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Bagged Cabbage: Markets are steady. Quality is good.
Broccoli:
Broccoli markets are coming off. The recent rain in Yuma caused some quality issues, such as mildew and pin rot, in the first week of harvest, but we should start to see an improvement going forward. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added Broccoli items. Quality is fair to good.
Brussel Sprouts: Alert
Markets are up and sold out. Salinas Valley and Oxnard regions are dealing with insect pressure, some decay, and smaller-sized produce. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added Brussel Sprout items. Quality is fair.
Shippers are prorating to 50% of a 10-week average on all Commodity and Value-added Brussel Sprouts.
Cabbage:
Carrots:
- Cello markets are mostly steady. Quality is good.
- Loose Markets are steady. Quality has been good.
- Value-add Snack Carrots are steady. Quality is good.
Cauliflower:
Markets are coming off. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added Cauliflower items. Quality is good.
Celery:
The market is firm, with moderate to light supplies expected from Southern California. Production in Yuma is not expected to begin until after Christmas. Quality concerns are minimal, with only slight seeder reported. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added Celery items. Quality is fair to good.
Citrus:
- Lemon: Markets are up. District 1 (San Joaquin) is starting light, with fruit still coloring and limited volume. District 3 (CA Desert/AZ) remains the main region, though volumes will decline, and 140-count and smaller sizes are very limited. Mexico is also running with good volumes. Quality is good.
- Limes: Market is tightening with lower volumes and holiday demand. Large sizes are peaking now, while smaller sizes will peak by mid-December with the new crop. Some lots may show occasional styler.
- Orange: Navels are in full swing as the main variety. Markets are rising on smaller fruit due to limited availability, while peak sizing is shifting toward 72- count. Current gas times are about 2 days, with brix around 12. Colder nights have helped reduce gassing times. Quality is good.
Cucumbers:
- Cucumber markets are steady. Quality is good.
- Cello Cucumber markets are steady. Quality is good.
Eggplant:
Market is soft as volumes ramp in southern Florida. Quality is good.
Grapes:
Domestic green grape harvest ended abruptly over the weekend, with very limited volume and questionable quality remaining. Domestic red grapes are still available this week and next, though supplies will decline quickly in December. Imports have started lightly on both coasts, with volume expected to increase significantly in the coming weeks. Quality is fair to good.
Green Onions: Alert
Markets are up and sold out. Green onion supplies are tightening due to recent rains reducing yields. Expect the market to stay strong into next week. Quality is fair.
Herbs:
- Basil: Quality is fair.
Lettuce Iceberg:
Lettuce markets are coming off. Common defects on arrival include brown butts, discoloration, and misshapen heads. Weights are ranging from 36 to 42 pounds. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added Lettuce items. Quality is fair to good.
Lettuce Leaf:
- Romaine markets are coming off. Quality issues reported include discoloration and tip or fringe burn. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added Romaine items. Quality is fair to good.
- Romaine Heart markets are coming off. Quality issues reported include discoloration and tip or fringe burn. Quality is fair to good.
- Green Leaf markets are coming off. Quality issues reported include discoloration and tip or fringe burn. There is an AOG trigger on all value-added Green Leaf items. Quality is fair to good.
- Red Leaf markets are coming off. Quality issues reported include discoloration and tip or fringe burn. Quality is fair to good.
Lettuce Tender Leaf:
Arcadian, Spring Mix, Spinach, Cilantro, Arugula, and Italian Parsley. Tender leaf supplies are tightening due to lower yields caused by insects and recent hail. Quality is fair.
Melons:
- Cantaloupes: The Westside deal is complete. Offshore and Mexican cantaloupes are available. Offshore cantaloupe pricing is high due to vessel delays and lower yields entering the U.S., keeping markets elevated until supplies improve. Offshore cantaloupes are peaking on 9s with excellent quality and brix levels. Mexican cantaloupes offer better sizing. Supply issues from last week’s protests in Mexico have improved this week. Quality is fair to good.
- Honeydews: Offshore and Mexican honeydews are available. Offshore pricing is elevated due to vessel delays and lower U.S. yields, keeping markets high until supplies improve. Offshore honeydews are peaking on 5s with excellent quality and brix levels. Quality is good.
Onions:
Overall demand remains strong, with steady supplies of all three colors shipping from ID, OR, and WA. Prices are holding firm on yellows and reds, while the market for whites is trending upward. Quality is good.
Peppers:
- Green Pepper market is steady. Quality on inbound has been good.
- Red Pepper markets are up. Quality is good.
Pineapples:
Markets are steady. Quality has been good.
Potatoes:
Harvest is complete, and supplies are now coming out of storage. The quality remains good, with a well-balanced range of sizes available. Color potatoes are coming from CA, ID, MN, WA, and WI. Quality is good.
Squash:
Market is softening slightly on both green and yellow squash
Tomatoes:
- Round tomato markets are coming off. Quality is good.
- Roma tomato markets are coming off. Quality is good.
- Grape tomato markets are coming off. Quality is good.
- Cherry tomato markets are coming off. Quality is good.
Yams: Alert
Markets are active. Jumbo yams are in short supply. Orders moving forward will have a high probability of being prorated. Quality is good.
